Liquidiser constructs and drives a community of people creating new works in sound and images. Liquidiser exists in its current form as a series of live audio visual events. TheLiquidiser.co.uk is an online presence promoting the work of Liquidiser as a community and that of its individuals.

+ History

Liquidiser was founded by Richard Powell and Tony Bowring in 1994 -emerging from their jazz/reggae/improv outfit Four Bop Drop.
Tony arrived from the Sheffield improv experimental scene by route of running a record shop in Spain. Richard had operated in both indie rock and free improvisation taking in film, performance poetry and dance, as organiser of Northampton Musicians Collective.
A record label, Rumpo Records, and an appearance on The Whistle Test being a couple of things that happened along the way.
The Liquidiser’s first gigs were at Slurps in Bridge Street and brought poetry slams, North African Arabic music, free improv and electronica to Northampton.
A move to Roadmender gave an opportunity to run workshops as well as put on a wider range of performers.
Tony left Northampton in 1998, the parting shot being a Four Bop Drop CD on SLAM! Records. The band by now being an out and out free improv group four piece.
As costs soared and funding remained static, the gigs got fewer and fewer. Now running Liquidiser alone, Richard asked for help with the organisation at the end of a Yasukatsu Oshmia/Toshimaru Nakamura gig in 2002.
Paul Wilson duly volunteered and after 12 months of plotting, visioning, blue skying and drink they came up with Beta Testing.
The focus was now on new work and work in progress by (mainly) local artists and almost always in a combination of visuals and sound.
Many Beta Testing events have since taken place. Nick Hamlyn providing the PA. Nick also being a member of Four Bop Drop throughout its life.
James Smith works with Paul on all things digital and video.
Paul and James often overcoming Herculean tasks to make the visuals run on the night.

Experimentation and improvisation remain at the core, the same as they did 12 years ago.

RICHARD POWELL
Richard is a serial multi-instrumentalist with percussion, piano, acoustic and electric guitars and synths all benefiting from this journey. But his alto saxophone always demands that the debate continues and that he returns to its therapies regularly.
Currently occupying his time by re-inventing films and videos he made in the 80s for the Liquidiser Environment, working in Cubase for reasons he is hoping to find out soon, and developing the possibilities of midi wind controllers in a context of improvisation and experimentation.
The organisation of the Liquidiser intrudes on these endeavours in ways almost mystical.

NICK HAMLYN
The proprietor of Pied Piper Records, the collectors' shop in Northampton, the author of the Penguin Price Guide for Record and CD Collectors, the secretary of the Northampton Writers Group, and he plays guitar. He can be found on the internet in a variety of places (452 Google hits at the time of writing), but chiefly at www.piedpiper-records.co.uk

ROGER BULLEN
I am Roger Bullen

I play drums, bent drum machines, rhythm synth and pads, hand drums and the washboard
I used to be in a Punk Band called Eater when I was 14
I am interested in the visual arts
My biggest fear would be to live in a world without smells
I am playing in The Murmerists, Klang and the reformed Eater.

LEE MAPLEY (NOIA)
Creates dark ambient soundscapes, glitchy beats and atmospheres. With a love of electronic music and music production he creates and manipulates sound using sequencers, drum machines, guitar synth and circuit bent toys. All audible sound can be recorded, processed and reconstructed in an improvised enviroment. Since joining Liquidiser, NOIA has taken part in numerous events either improvising or composing for themed nights, working both solo and with Roger Bullen and '4 To Motion'.
