The Point of Centre project
The POINT of CENTRE combines a range of new, hybrid activities: reportage
spliced with creative image-making; abstraction colliding with narratives
of contemporary social history uniquely documenting day-to-day change
using non-journalistic methods and processes.
Four spaces were selected, each representing an aspect of contemporary
life in Northampton (circa. 2007): transport, commerce, health and (life
and) death.
The project reflects Northampton's 'uniqueness' as a crucible for change
that will parallel its growth into the twenty first century through a
range of short, digital audio/visual studies: of people and places linked
by a series of socio-cultural events. We are developing a technique for
the making of these studies which combines observation, portraiture, journalistic
enquiry & impressionistic storytelling
Transport: the slow disintegration of Northampton's landmark bus station,
in light of the ever-increasing tensions, questions and pressures public
transport seems to be facing.
Health: the closure of three operating theatres at Northampton General
Hospital and the impact of this event on those working in the theatres,
whilst presenting the closures in the context of wider NHS restructuring
and the impact on local communities
(Life and) death: links between the annual Bloomsday celebration at the
graveside of James Joyce's daughter Lucia in Northampton and the town's
history in terms of integrating transient populations
Commerce: the point of transformation of Northampton's old fish and meat
market into a venue celebrating the commodification of contemporary culture
The project is currently in post-production, and available for purchase
in late summer 2007.
